This was one of my favorite songs when I was in primary! We used it our program this year, right after “When I Am Baptized” and it really fit in with our themes and script. This is a great last minute addition if you need a little more time filled. (Our primary is so small, we fit 11 songs in this year!) It’s a quick learn, just one verse and it’s peppy which I find always motivates the kids to learn it faster! The message is simple and clear, I know who I am, I know what I have to do, and (once I’ve been baptized) I belong to Christ’s church and will follow him.
Here’s a way to introduce the song: (this was inspired by the book “A Children’s Songbook Companion”)
This looks really complicated at first, but keep in mind this is the finished product. So how do you get here? First, have a poster or a big piece of paper ready with the outline of a person (or if you have a piece of paper big enough, trace one of your kids!). Start with singing the first words of the song “I Belong” and write them right across the middle of your person. Next, draw an arrow to the side and write the words to complete the line “to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” (I put in numbers so you could follow it more easily, but you don’t have to do that if it gets too crowded!). Continue like this with each line of the song, putting those action words on the parts of the body they go with (follow on the feet, know on the head, proclaim on the mouth, etc.) Connecting the visual with the verb will help them to see what they are pledging to do when they sing this song. You may want to talk about what it means to “honor his name” (great opportunity to talk about the baptismal covenant and standing as a witness of Christ) and what it means to “proclaim”, most of my kids didn’t know that word, so connecting it to missionary work helped. If you’re working with just junior primary, you could use pictures for the second half of the phrases instead of the words. In fact, you could cut them right out of my flip chart:
As you can see, I modeled the chart after the same concept as above, so the action words are really highlighted. These pictures would be great on your body maps next to the words, or in place of the words. My kids learned this song SUPER fast, they had it down in 2 weeks. And they still love to sing it, post-program. I love when they really connect with a song that has such an important and central message of the gospel and living our lives righteously!
